What is FDR’s impact on the presidential campaign approaches?
ROGER: Certainly, but that is precisely what FDR started in this campaign when he realized that amongst all his constituency, the one which went in the fewest votes was all the women who were not at that time probably middle class because they were busy with households to manage. And so it was in that campaign that he turned to radio for the first time, calling for persuasion of voters on the basis of his speeches rather than their purchases, a grassroots approach spearheaded by him. So the point of television advertisement and now iPhones and whatever is that communication in politics goes right from the top to the bottom, as it were.
